Thanks to the significant volume of reserves discovered in the Browse Basin, which lies more than 200 kilometers off the northern coast of Western Australia, Ichthys LNG is one of the largest projects of its kind in the world. Requiring the construction of particularly sizable offshore infrastructure, the longest subsea pipeline in the southern hemisphere, and an onshore liquefaction plant close to the city of Darwin, it is also one of the most complex.

In 2000, one of the biggest gas and condensate discoveries in Australia’s history was made by INPEX. It was made in the Ichthys Field, situated within the Browse Basin and located some 200 km off the northern coast of Western Australia.

The significant size of the discovered reserves has allowed the development of one of the largest and most complex Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) developments in the world. It involves some of the most colossal offshore installations in the industry, the longest subsea pipeline in the southern hemisphere and land-based processing and liquefaction facilities near Darwin.

Ichthys LNG is actually four massive projects rolled into one. It is one of the rare projects worldwide that spans all of the links in the liquefied natural gas (LNG) production value chain. It includes:

  • Two offshore floating platforms, connected to a subsea production network, that operate simultaneously: the central processing facility (CPF) — the largest semi-submersible platform in the world — for gas processing and a floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel for condensate production and offloading.
  • An 890-kilometer-long subsea gas pipeline connecting the CPF platform to the onshore liquefaction plant. The gas pipeline has been designed to include five tiebacks along its length, so that new discoveries in the Browse and Bonaparte Basins can be connected to the Ichthys production system.
  • An onshore liquefaction plant made from 230 modules prefabricated in Southeast Asia, representing 175,000 tons of equipment. The plant has an annual production capacity of 8.9 million tons of LNG and 1.6 million tons of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).
