The growth of domestic gas production in the United States and the evolution of the American energy model have led to the transformation of the Cameron LNG site. Converting the regasification terminal into an LNG liquefaction plant for export was a major challenge for Total's teams and their American and Japanese partners. All these operations took place on the shores of Lake Calcasieu, in the heart of a site located 15 miles from the Gulf of Mexico, in Hackberry, Louisiana.

A flagship project to boost American LNG exports

In order to provide new outlets for American natural gas, the Cameron LNG project has acquired liquefaction technology from Air Products and Chemical Inc. (APCI) for the construction of three liquefaction trains and the ancillary facilities required for the proper functioning of the site. With a nominal capacity of 4.5 million tonnes per year (Mtpa), the first two liquefaction trains were put into service in May and December 2019. An additional train, with the same nominal capacity, will be inaugurated at summer 2020. It will bring the total capacity of the site to 13.5 Mtpa.

Cameron LNG's infrastructures are at the heart of operations aimed at:

  • receiving feedgas purchased from our American customers and delivered directly to the factory;
  • pre-treating and liquefying this feedgas to store liquefied natural gas (LNG). Depending on the feedgas quality, the plant will also produce a heavy hydrocarbon stream. Our facilities have been designed to recover, store and sell this product;
  • finally, loading LNG onto LNG carriers in order to supply our customers around the world.

A SITE DESIGNED TO RESIST THE FORCES OF NATURE

Exposed to hurricanes that regularly hit the Gulf of Mexico and the southern coast of the United States, the Cameron LNG site meets the most stringent building standards to withstand gusts of wind of up to 186 mph (300 km/h) for a duration of 3 seconds.

From the very beginning of the project, the installations were designed to cope with the rise in sea level (surge) observed during extremely powerful weather phenomena, the occurrence of which occurs only once every 100 years. All the equipment is also installed above the mark for the elevation of the tides during the most severe storms, occurring on average once every 500 years.

STRENGTHENing TOTAL'S PRESENCE THROUGHOUT THE LNG VALUE CHAIN

In close consultation with its partners and with the agreement of the United States Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), Total is currently discussing opportunities to extend LNG production and storage capacities at the Cameron LNG site. This development could see the construction of two additional liquefaction trains, with a nominal capacity of 4.5 Mtpa each, as well as two other storage tanks.

By doubling our LNG export portfolio in the United States, this project confirms Total's position as the second largest private global player on the LNG market. As the least CO2-emitting fossil energy, Cameron LNG contributes to our ambition to reducing our emissions. In addition, we meet the growing global demand for secure energy at a competitive price.
