Édouard Thibaut, electricity expert at TEC, part of EP

Édouard Thibaut is an electrical engineer with a degree from the École supérieure d’ingénieurs en électrotechnique et électronique (ESIEE Paris). Before joining Total, he worked at Alstom Power Conversion, now Converteam, where he held several positions in engineering, commissioning and R&D in the field of variable-speed power drives. He has taken part in international onshore and offshore projects in Asia, Europe and the Americas.

He has been working in the Electricity department of the E&P Technology division as an electricity expert since 2009. He is involved in subsea, LNG, and conventional onshore and offshore work. At the corporate level, as an expert in the area of variable speeds, he also consults for Refining & Chemicals sites (Lavéra, Gonfreville-l'Orcher and Feyzin).

Projects

As part of his work, Édouard Thibaut helped advance the development of the Martin Linge project by providing it with an entirely unprecedented onshore power source.

He is playing an active role in a number of projects involving innovative technologies to develop and operate deep offshore fields, including:

  • the Joint Industry Project (JIP) with ABB, a company that develops electrical equipment for the subsea transmission, distribution and conversion of electricity;
  • the development of high-voltage subsea electrical induction and permanent magnet motors;
  • the development of international subsea standards.

He also helps solve technical problems at sites operated by Total that also involve partners such as Statoil, Petrobras, Shell and Chevron.

Various collaborations

  • Member of the Subsea Electrical Power Standardization (SEPS)
  • Member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE)
  • Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) participating in the effort to standardize subsea electrical equipment as part of the JWG31 IEC/IEEE 61886 working group
  • Member of the Group Technology Committee (CTG) at Total

Patents

  • Édouard Thibaut holds two patents in the field of fully electric subsea technologies.

Publications

  • He has authored or co-authored 18 technical articles in the field of electrical engineering for subsea, LNG, onshore and conventional offshore applications as well as for several Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) forums.
