Kaombo, in ultra-deep waters, contains six distinct fields, each posing a different geological challenge. Even in this tough environment, our drilling professionals set new records in safety, efficiency and economy during its development.

Beneath the ultra-deep waters of Angola’s Gulf of Guinea lie massive reservoirs of oil and gas—658 million barrels of reserves within the Kaombo project’s 800 square kilometers alone. Yet, until recently, this treasure trove was deemed unrecoverable due to its sheer size and complexity, amplified by runaway costs in the oil industry.

It took a tremendous effort by Total’s professionals to rethink the technical and contractual bases—without compromising on safety or environmental care. The result is a project that is dramatically extending the oil industry’s deepwater reach.
