Pierre Giboin, naval architect

Pierre graduated from the ENSTA (French graduate school for advanced techniques) in 2001, and carried out his final year project in Total as part of the ultra-deep offshore project. He started his career in 2001 at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique then joined Total in 2006 as part of the Trading & Shipping department, where he took part in projects to build LNG carriers (Yemen LNG, Angola LNG).

In 2012, he entered the E&P Project department and was seconded to Yamal LNG as head of the ship design and building office. He was responsible for designing and building the 28 ships of the project and particularly the icebreaking vessels (15 LNG carriers, 2 oil tankers, 2 heavy-lift ships, 1 port icebreaker and 4 tugboats).

In 2014, he joined the GRP department as a naval architect and was seconded to the Northern Lights project (transportation of CO2) where he worked on pre-projects for LNG FSU, regasification terminals and also on issues raised by transportation in the Arctic.

 

Projects

  • In 2012-2013 Pierre Giboin participated in design development for the first Arctic LNG (ARC7), which ended in an order for 15 ships from South Korea.
  • At the same time as the design and building phases, his team developed and built, between 2014 and 2016, the first Arctic heavy transportation vessel (two PC3 ships built in China) as well as the Sabetta port fleet (one ice-breaker, a towing ice-breaker and three tugs reinforced for use in ice and built in Russia).
  • Most recently he participated in the development and control of two Arctic tankers for carrying condensate (one ship under construction in Finland and one ship under construction in China).

 

Collaborations

  • Collaborations with Aker Arctic (Finland), Central Marine Research and Design Institute-CNIIMF (Russia), Krylov Shipbuilding Research Institute (Russia), HSVA (Germany) for the development of Arctic designs for oil and gas tankers.
