Thierry Baron - Exploration Production - Total

Thierry Baron, Project Manager for the Major Accident Prevention and Numerical Remote Vigilance

After graduating from the CPE Lyon engineering school in 1983 and obtaining a degree in refining from the IFP School in 1984, Thierry earned a doctoral degree in petroleum engineering in 1987 from the University of Western Ontario, Canada, as part of a refining-related exchange program with the Institut Français du Pétrole (IFP).

He joined Elf in 1987 as a process manager in charge of the specifications and start-up of a gas-phase polyethylene unit at the Gonfreville plant in France. He then worked as a production supervisor at the Jarrie facility before returning to processes, successively leading the Fluoropolymers Department during the construction of a new unit at the Pierre-Bénite plant and then the PVC Department during production base restructuring, which involved plant shutdowns and significant investments.

As Styrene Processes & Technologies Manager, Thierry coordinated technical support for plants located across Europe, Asia and the United States, in such areas as production, basic engineering for investment projects, start-up monitoring and licensing. Total then assigned him as an expert to the IFP’s Center for Refining, Petrochemicals & Gas, where he managed international master’s programs for the IFP School and IFP Training.

After a stint as head of HSE at the Lacq Research Center, he moved back into R&D as project manager for the Major Accident Prevention (MAP) and Numerical Remote Vigilance (NRV) research programs. Appointed as an associate professor by the IFP in 2011, he continues to provide training on such topics as risk assessment and management in engineering systems, industrial business and project management, and safety culture.
